  1. YB 5581 – 1938 type Y – now being listed as YB

The early diesel were to start with were referred to as ‘fig 2137 diesel’ and as the ‘Y type’ this is found in the early catalogues BUT when you look at the parts book for the same engine they are referred to as ‘YB’
The early engines also had ‘Y Type’ cast on to the block at sometime around 1938 to 1940 Southern Cross started casting ‘YB’ onto blocks

Rob Laurent thinks they all should be called ‘YB’, it’s just some collectors want to refer to their engine as a ‘Y type’ because that is what is cast onto the block

I would start calling them all ‘YB’
